What Hammond's Ferry is built from

The Hammond's Ferry problem
The rugs here are often older and better than the houses they are in, and the trouble starts with arithmetic. A nine-by-twelve that was right in a Summerville dining room does not fit a room in a house designed at half the footprint, and there are only three things anyone ever does about that. They fold the excess under, which puts a permanent hinge through the foundation and grinds the fold line to death from both sides at once. They let it ride up the baseboard, which does the same thing on a curve. Or they have it cut. Cutting is the option that is genuinely repairable and almost always mishandled: a rug can be resized properly, but that means opening the foundation between wefts, taking the section out, rejoining the two halves knot by knot so the pattern still runs through, and building a new selvedge and fringe onto the cut end. What normally happens instead is a straight cut with shears and a strip of binding tape or a machine-sewn hem — and a hand-knotted rug will not tolerate that. The knots along the cut have nothing locking them in, the outermost row goes first, and the rug begins shedding rows inward from a line that will not stop on its own.
