What Olde Town is built from
The downtown historic district on the river plain, a short walk off Broad Street: Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne townhouses and cottages running from roughly the 1850s to the 1900s, on narrow lots, a great many of them cut into flats mid-century and put back together since. Floors are original pine over shallow cellars or brick piers.
A rehabilitation neighborhood, restored house by house, mixing long-standing residents with downtown professionals and people working in the medical district. Rugs here are as often bought for a room being brought back as inherited along with the house.
The Olde Town problem
The ground on this side of the levee is neither sand nor clay. It is river silt, the fine alluvium a big river leaves across its own floodplain, and the grain size is the whole reason it matters to a rug. Sand you can feel underfoot and, with enough patience, beat out of a pile. Silt sits in a size range where the particles behave more like smoke than like grit: light enough to hang in the air behind a passing car, fine enough to drop straight through a wool pile without ever being felt, and small enough that a domestic vacuum pulls air over the top of it instead of lifting it. It settles at the base of the knots and stays there. Because it arrives evenly, across the whole rug, it never shows up as a mark — what it shows up as is the field going quiet: reds a shade browner, ivories greying, the contrast between border and field slowly closing. Almost nobody calls us about that, because as far as the room is concerned nothing has happened. Then the rug goes into the wash, the first rinse runs the colour of weak coffee, and what comes back out is the rug they bought.
