What Woodside is built from
A large gated community on the east side of Aiken, built out from the 1980s onward across wooded, rolling ground: brick and stucco houses on generous lots, sunrooms and screened rooms, and a wave of floor remodels over the last decade that has taken the carpet out and put luxury vinyl plank and engineered wood in.
Established and largely retired households, a great many of whom moved here from somewhere else and brought good rugs with them. The rooms are furnished properly, the floors are new, and the rug goes down last.
The Woodside problem
Almost every rug problem in this community starts with the thing that was bought to solve one. New vinyl plank is slick, a rug on it slides, so a grip pad goes underneath — and the inexpensive ones are PVC, or a foam scrim loaded with plasticiser and tackifier to make them cling. Those additives do not stay put. Held against a vinyl floor in a warm room they migrate, and the result is well known to flooring manufacturers: a yellow-to-brown discolouration printed onto the floor in the exact waffle pattern of the pad. What gets mentioned far less often is that the migration runs in both directions. The same plasticiser wicks upward into the cotton foundation of the rug lying on it, where it is an oily stain spreading outward from the back, unresponsive to ordinary cleaning chemistry, and quite capable of carrying that yellowing up into a pale field. The second half of it is simply age: after five or six warm summers those pads embrittle and break down, and the crumb they shed works into the backing as a gritty, sticky residue that has to be flushed out before anything else about the rug can even be assessed.
