What Evans is built from

The Evans problem
A new house here is a tight house, and that changes which failure turns up. Ground moisture is not the story on a modern sealed slab; the air conditioner is, and specifically one that is larger than the house needs. Cooling equipment only pulls water out of the air while it is actually running, because the water has to condense on a coil that has had time to get properly cold and stay that way. An oversized system reaches the setpoint fast and shuts down, then does it again half an hour later — short cycles that keep the thermostat satisfied and dehumidify almost not at all. The result is a house that feels cold and reads high on a hygrometer at the same moment, which people find difficult to believe and wool has no trouble at all detecting: right through a CSRA summer the fibre sits at a moisture content well above where anyone assumes it is. Put the rug that goes in that room on top of it — large, laid over vinyl plank, and more often than not built on a latex layer that lets nothing back out — and a spill that would have flashed off in a drier house instead stays down in the backing long enough to turn.
