What Grovetown is built from
One of the fastest-growing places in Georgia, and it looks like it: new subdivisions of slab-built houses on graded lots, garages at the front, and driveways that are the real front door. Interiors are open-plan with vinyl plank throughout, and rugs are used to zone a space rather than to fill a room.
Young households, many of them new to the area, and the highest single-door traffic anywhere on the route, because everybody in the house comes in the same way.
The Grovetown problem
Nobody in a new subdivision uses the front door. The car goes into the garage, the garage door comes down, and every person and every dog in the house comes in through one interior door into a kitchen or a mudroom — so instead of the soil load being shared between a front hall, a back door and a patio slider, all of it lands on a single runner two or three feet wide. That alone would be enough to finish a rug early. What makes it worse is what is on a garage floor. A driveway sealed in the last few years, tyres that have been sitting on hot asphalt, a mower, a can that dripped: the residue is petroleum, and petroleum is oily. Oil on a rug behaves nothing like dust. It films the fibre, it will not release to water on its own, and above all it is adhesive — it takes the fine sand already coming in off bare graded lots and glues it into the pile as a dark, hard, matted band. What arrives at the workshop is effectively two rugs joined together: black and stiff for its first four feet, clean for the rest, with a sharp line across the middle where people stopped walking.
