What West Lake is built from
A gated Columbia County community developed from the 1970s onward around its lake, on wooded, rolling lots: large brick and stucco houses, two-storey entries, and hard flooring almost throughout — oak, travertine, and engineered plank in the more recent remodels. The rugs are large, chosen deliberately, and expensive.

The West Lake problem
The most common damage we see here is done by an appliance everybody believes is helping. A robot vacuum is a good match for a hard floor and a poor one for a hand-knotted rug, for three separate reasons. It has almost no airflow at depth, so it lifts surface lint and leaves the sand at the base of the pile exactly where it was, while giving the household a daily reason to believe the rug is being cleaned. It navigates by repeating routes rather than wandering, so the same three feet of edge is crossed the same way several hundred times a year instead of being walked on at random. And it treats fringe as string: the brush roll catches the warp ends, winds them in, and either shears them off or drags them out of the foundation a few at a time. The signature is a rug with an immaculate open field, one selvedge worn thin and fuzzy on a single side, fringe short and ragged at one end only, and a foundation still full of the grit that has been quietly grinding away at it for years.
