Rug Cleaning in National Hills
Collection and delivery in National Hills are included. We take the rug back to the workshop, wash it properly, and bring it home.
What National Hills is built from
A 1950s and 1960s west Augusta subdivision of low brick ranch houses, nearly all of them slab-on-grade, with hardwood or terrazzo in the main rooms and the original wall-to-wall carpet pulled out of a good many of them since. Carports, shallow eaves, mature hardwoods, and plans that call for one room-sized rug in the living room and a runner down the hall.
A mix of original-owner households and buyers taking a mid-century house back to hard floors — which is the decision that puts an area rug down in the first place.
The National Hills problem
The floor is the problem here, and it is invisible because it is underneath everything. Slabs poured in the 1950s went straight onto graded sand with no polyethylene sheet beneath them, because that detail did not become standard practice until later. A slab with no vapour retarder under it does not simply sit there: ground moisture moves up through the concrete continuously. It is also the coldest surface in an air-conditioned house, so water vapour already in the room migrates toward it as well. Neither of those does any harm to bare concrete, which lets it all go. Now lay a rug on top with the pad most people buy — solid rubber or vinyl, chosen because it grips — and the moisture arriving from below has nowhere left to leave. The rug becomes the lid. What comes back to the workshop from these streets tends to have a pile that still looks respectable, a foundation that smells like the back of a cupboard, cotton warps gone soft and grey where they lay against the pad, and sometimes a clean rectangle printed onto the slab itself, in the one place nothing was ever able to dry.
If that sounds like your rug, send the form and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you whether it needs the full treatment or not.
