What Summerville is built from
The city's oldest high-ground housing, laid out as a separate village in the 1780s and absorbed by Augusta much later. The Summerville problem
These houses were built to survive a summer without air conditioning, and they still behave that way. Tall sash, high ceilings and a wide central hall were the cooling system, and the envelope that goes with them is loose by design: single glazing, unsealed hall doors, and a great deal of surface for outside air to come through. Air conditioning retrofitted into a house like that cools it without ever really drying it, so through July and August the wool in these rooms is carrying a moisture content much closer to the yard than to the thermostat. That matters, because the thing that actually eats a wool rug is not damp — it is clothes moths and carpet beetles, and warm, still air at high humidity is precisely the nursery they are looking for. They do not start in the middle of a busy room. They start in the two feet of rug under a sideboard, behind a floor-length curtain, or beneath the corner of a bed in a room where nobody has moved the furniture in a decade. The pile above them looks perfect the whole time. The damage is underneath, where the larvae graze wool off the foundation and leave the warp standing bare, and it is normally found by a mover rather than by an owner.
